Abstract: We have developed a simple micrometer for the calibration of cylinders and wires. The instrument uses a laser interferometer as a length scale and provides absolute measurements by cylindrical artifacts. Eliminating the need for master artifacts allows increased accuracy and efficiency. The micrometer has been thoroughly tested against other calibration methods at NIST, and an early prototype has been used in international comparisons for optical fiber diameter measurements. The uncertainty of the current model is estimated to be better than 40 nanometers (1.6 microinches) for small wires (2 a). Basic metrological principles used in the design of the micrometer will be designed and planned developments will be discussed.
