Abstract: Some of the most difficult and tedious work in the standards and calibration laboratory has to do with measurements requiring unusually high accuracy (lppm t o .Olppm), high sensitivity (0.1 microvolt to nanovolts) or both. This paper describes work done on automating such measurements using a new digital measurement instrument and high-gain preamplifier in conjunction with a new low-level digital scanner. The 1 imit of performance for a new computerized system (which includes these instruments, together with speciaily designed. interface equipment, software and central processor) is sufficiently high to accomplish even these difficult measurements quickly, accurately and automatically. The total system includes complete prerecorded software required for carrying out the measurements automatically in accordance with standard procedures, automatically performing the standard statistical data analysis and automatically printing out or plotting calibration reports and data in standard form.
