Abstract: The use of process chromatography by the natural gas industry started in the 1960s. These early uses were primarily in gas processing plants. During the late 1970s gas companies started looking for more accurate methods of determining the Btu than the traditional caloremeter. Chromatography became the choice of most gas companies. Process gas chromatography is a special application of the more widely used laboratory chromatographs. The primary difference is process chromatographs are designed to operate with a minimum of operator intervention while laboratory chromatographs are typically controlled directly by the operator.
