Abstract: Relatively inexpensive test equipment, manufactured by a number of companies, is available for use by natural gas utilities to detect the presence of combustible gas. The instruments are rugged enough for field use, yet sensitive enough to detect low concentrations of combustibles. However, they are unable to identify the type or source of combustible gas that is being measured. This paper presents a laboratory test method that is being used by Atlanta Gas Light Company to supplement field instrumentation in order to identify the type or source of combustible gas that is being detected.
