Abstract: The Cove Point terminal received its first shipment of Algerian LNG in March 1978, some nine years after project conception. Commissioning began in August 1977 and continued until June 1978, a period of some ten months. As is usually the case, commissioning and start-up ran concurrently with the completion of construction, and required extensive coordination between construction and operating personnel. This article addresses the most noteworthy events in the commissioning of Cove Point. The first major process commissioning activity was the dryout of all cryogenic vessels, piping and equipment after field pressure testing. Its purpose was to remove all standing water and moisture from cryogenic systems to prepare them for the introduction of LNG and cold vapors. Without dry-out, ice could form and result in damage to pumps, compressors, expansion joints, and valve seats, not to mention blockages in the small bore instrument and control tubing, and the seizure of bearings and bushings in rotating machinery.
