Abstract: Through the successful startups of the several naphtha gasification plants during the past few years, the gas industry has had some valuable initial experiences with modern hydrocarbon processing facilities. !t has gotten its feet wet. Additional experience is being acquired, or soon will be acquired, in the course of the startup of the several pilot and demonstration coal gasification units. However, as the gigantic full-scale coal, oil shale, and heavy oil gasification plants finally come along, they will bring startup and initial operations problems an order of magnitude greater than will have been experienced to that point.
