Abstract: DNV in Groningen, Netherlands has initiated a Joint Industry Project (JIP) 1 to study the performance of currently available metering technologies when operating non-conventional gases. These gases can contain high-CO2 percentages from biogases or related to carbon capture and storage (CCS). Also, hydrogen can be mixed into natural gases in the gas grids as part of the energy transition. The objective of the study is to understand instrument sensitivity for these gases and to define scaling rules which allow meters to be calibrated on gases different from the field application. For the JIP experiments four turbine gasmeters and nine ultrasonic gasmeters of several manufacturers are tested with different gases. A traceable reference system is needed with proven uncertainty related to type of gas or the composition of the gas mixture.
