Abstract: In the Natural Gas Industry, the term Instrument has many different meanings. In the broadest sense of the word, an instrument is any device that allows us to determine the conditions inside a gas piping system. For our discussion, we will try to categorize instruments in four ways: Indicators, Recorders, Controllers and Integrators. Indicators can generally be described as devices that make it possible to see inside a pipeline or meter set. Simple examples might be a pressure gauge or thermometer. These might allow a technician to make adjustments to pressure regulation equipment or verify the accuracy of another instrument.
