Abstract: The current incentive and stimulus to improve gas pipelines in their design, installation, and operation comes from three sectors: modern technology, environmental concerns, and the passage of time. Southern California Gas Company (SoCal Gas) has initiated programs in the investigation of automatic shut-off valves and the use of smart pigs to detect piping flaws in environmentally sensitive or remote areas. The investigation of the need for automatic shut-off valves has been triggered by a proposed requirement by the California Division of Highways to install such valves at each end of any highway bridge which supports gas piping. We have also embarked on an evaluation program to identify and prioritize replacement of aging pipelines, This paper discusses the pros and cons of these topics and presents SoCal Gas progress in addressing these issues.
