Abstract: During the last few years the importance of optimizing underground gas storage pressures has increased from both the safety and economic point of view. Research on this topic, which has been under way in the Rock Mechanics Laboratory at The Pennsylvania State University since 1966, is therefore assuming a position of increased importance. At present, this research involves both model and field studies: the latter were initialed in I97I and are still in their preliminary stages. The model studies, on the other hand, have been under way for a number of years, and a monograph (Hardy, et al., 1972) presenting the detailed results to date will be available June 1972.
