Abstract: Mercury is a metal with a long and literally colorful history. Its use predates historical records. There is evidence that mercury was known in the 15th and 16th centuries BC. In Greece, it was used medicinally by Hippocrates, the Father of Medicine about 400 BC and was also used in India and Persia about the same time. Because certain forms of mercury are bright red, the Chinese mined mercury about 200 years BC to use S vermillion ink and paint.
