Abstract: The Assistant Secretary for Environment, U.S. Department of Energy, has responsibility for identifying, characterizing, and ameliorating the environmental, health, and safety issues and public concerns associated with commercial operation of specific energy systems. The need for a clarification of LNG safety and environmental control issues was identified by the Division of Environmental Control Technology as a result of discussions with various persons from Government, industry, and academia having expertise in LNG safety. This paper reviews the results of an assessment of LNG safety and environmental control research issues. Taking into consideration past and present research, the assessment identifies additional research required for an adequate understanding of the major safety concerns associated with transport, handling, and storage of LNG.
