Abstract: The calibration of ultrasonic flowmeters must begin with a consideration of the piping immediately upstream and downstream of the meter being calibrated. If the piping contains elbows, valves, flow conditioners, or other piping components then the effect of those components on the performance of the ultrasonic flowmeter must be considered. Little research data is available to guide flow measurement personnel when making piping configuration and meter calibration decisions. Some data is presented in this paper showing the effects of upstream elbows and flow conditioners on the performance of ultrasonic flowmeters. This data indicates that upstream components do effect ultrasonic flowmeter performance.
