Abstract: The United States is moving toward the metric system of measurement. What is the metric system? Is it the MKS (meter-kilogram-sec) system I used in high school physics? Partly. The metric system that has been proposed for use in the United States is a modified MKS system and is called the International System of Units (SI). In an act issued on July 28, 1866, the U. S. Congress declared it lawful to use the metric system of weights and measures.
