Abstract: This paper presents an overview of the Great Plains Coal Gasification Project relative to engineering, permits, construction and overall current status. Under the partnership arrangement, American Natural Resources is the project manager in regard to the ongoing day to day project activities. The objective of the Great Plains high-Btu coal gasification project is to demonstrate on a commercial scale the technical, economic and environmental acceptability for converting coal (hgnite) to pipeline quality substitute natural gas (SNG) in the United States. Although high-Btu gasification technology has been successfully demonstrated in other countries, this plant will provide the first commercial use of the technology in the United States. As such, it will serve as a forerunner for a United States synthetic fuels industry. This, in turn, will contribute to a reduction in foreign oil imports and the conservation of natural gas for residential and industrial use.
