Abstract: Recent technological developments have resulted in the mini-computer having a dominant role in future compressor station automation. Programmable logic is a necessity for implementation of the comprehensive control and diagnostic strategies which are expected to have significant impact on fuel and maintenance costs. In addition the cost/performance characteristics of the mini-computer cause it to be the logical approach by which to implement a variety of other functions as well. The functions which will be implemented via computer and the technical developments which have made them possible are the subject of this paper. Particular emphasis is placed on developments relating to station load allocation and engine diagnostics.
