Abstract: Due to a shortage of pipeline capacity across North America and significant price discrepancies between markets, oil producers have increasingly turned toward rail as a means of shipping their crude oil to refineries as a means of maximizing their netbacks. Shipments of crude oil by rail started from zero only a few years ago to mo re than 700,000 BPD in the North Dakota Bakken region alone.
