Abstract: Investigations of microbiologically-influenced corrosion (MIC) of carbon steel in natural gas industry operations have been underway since 1986 under the sponsorship of the Gas Research Institute (GRI). Work has focussed on improving the scientific understanding of MIC and its role in the corrosion process and on the development of more costeffective, targeted treatment approaches useful for gas industry operations. This paper describes some of the recent results of the program and discusses some of the newer detection and mitigation approaches under development or consideration.
