Title: Over Pressure Protection Methods

Abstract: This paper will discuss the methods of overpressure protection. The pressure reducing regulator in Fig. 1 is the basic device used to reduce the pressure from a high pressure source such as a transmission line to a lower pressure such as a distribution piping system. The regulator has a history of very reliable service, but because it is mechanical it can fail. A regulator can fail in two worst case conditions, wide open or fully closed. The fully closed regulator failure requires an alternate source of gas to supply the system needs. This situation is complex in its own right and will not be discussed further in this paper.
