Abstract: During the last decade, the Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement (GUM) 1 has become a worldwide-recognized standard for the evaluation of the measurement uncertainty at least at national metrological institutes, calibration laboratories and verification authorities. For practical use, the GUM excels in: Providing a consistent procedure for evaluating and expressing uncertainty Offering an easy way to implement computer-aided uncertainty budgeting. The basic steps of the GUM procedure are: modelling of the measurement, and quantitative description of the existing knowledge about the input quantities in accordance with the methods type A (evaluating by statistical means) and type B (evaluation by other means).
