Abstract: The East Ohio Gas Company is a large user of excess flow valves (EFVs). Over 200,000 of these valves have been installed in our system over a 15 year period. Our experience with these valves has been very positive. We believe that excess flow valves can be part of the answer to the design of service lines, but that each company must review their applicability to its own piping system. Generally, excess flow valve use is limited to new and renewed single meter residential service lines where the operating pressure generally is 10 psig or higher. There are certain other limitations that must be considered, such as presence of oil in the pipelines.
