Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to provide a brief overview of current non-destructive test techniques applied to aerial lift devices. Nondestructive tests are performed to locate and idenlify flaws in the structural material of the device under test. The paper discusses the nondestructive test techniques liquid penetrant inspection, ultrasonic inspection, magnetic particle inspection, radiographic inspection, and acoustic emission inspection. Most non-destructive test techniques are complementary in their ability to identify flaws within the structure. For example, liquid penetrant inspection may be ideal for surface defects while radiography may be ideal for sub-surface defects. The paper presents the overall application of non-destructive test techniques and their relation to each other as applied to aerial lift trucks.
