Abstract: The first gas mains were installed in Cincinnati during the 1840s. Location records were prepared on the job site and consisted of a simple sketch on sheet paper. Later, this sketch was plotted on card stock. The overall system was maintained by plotting directly on 4 foot X 4 foot wing maps. A color and graphical code was used to differentiate pipe size and pressure level. This system, though very unwieldy, was maintained with minor variations into the 1960s.
