Abstract: Since 1981, GRI has focused a major portion of its annual distribution research budget on projects designed to reduce gas utility operating costs in conscruction and maintenance. The continuing research has resulted in the development and demonstration of new or improved materials, equipment, and techniques for the industry. Some of them are entering the market place, and are being used or adopted by some U.S. gas utilities in excavation and backfilling operations. Results of current research projects on products nearing commercialization are presented, along with estimated cost savings and dates when products will become available.
