Abstract: The Welch-Satterthwaite relation provides a useful tool for estimating the degrees of freedom for uncertainty estimates for measurement errors comprised of a linear sum of s-independent normally distributed quantities with different variances. Working from a derivation for the degrees of freedom of Type B uncertainty estimates, a variation of the Welch-Satterthwaite relation is developed that is applicable to combinations of errors that are both sindependent and correlated. Expressions for each case are provided for errors arising from both direct and multivariate measurements
