Abstract: Well casing cathodic protection has been the subject of many articles, but there has been comparatively little actual data published regarding mutual interference and the efforts directed toward minimizing it. The purpose of this paper is to present some interference data and to show the results of wellhead potential equalizing (or balancing) as a means of improving the spread of protective current in an interference situation. To accomplish this purpose, a detailed recounting of experiences is given for a field in which interference existed to such a degree prior to balancing that efforts at well casing cathodic protection were completely nullified. Also described is an installation that utilizes automatic balancing.
