Abstract: Five years ago, following two and a half years of design, we implemented an on-line, real-time, fully integrated material management system at Con Edison. This paper discusses the improvements which this system, referred to as MMS, has brought about, the problems that remain despite it, and what we would and would not do if we had it all to do over. While I will emphasize the good points of the system, no attempt will be made to hide its flaws. MMS is a reliable, accurate information system. The information is current because the system provides for real-time processing, and it is immediately accessible on line, via remote video terminals.
