Abstract: In the last 15 years, the utility industry has seen large advances in the use of hand-held computers for automating meter reading operations. Northern Indiana Public Service Company (NIPSCO), after careful evaluation and research, implemented a system in the spring of 1984. We will attempt, within the scope of this paper, to give a general overview of the evolution of automated meter reading, to present our experiences with these devices at NIPSCO, and to highlight for you what we perceive to be the future of the industry. In addition, we will outline those factors that we feel are important in selecting a system.
