Abstract: Twenty-six years ago my first job with the construction and repair department was with a cast iron main order crew. T was assigned on my first day of work as a helper to an old-time pipelayer. It was up to me to sling up ft-inch cast iron pipe and lower it into the trench. When this was done and the length of pipe reached the pipelayer, it was held about 2 feet above the trench bottom, and the old boy would strike it with his caulking hammer. If it had a sharp clear ring, it was considered to be free of cracks if it had a low thud sound, it was set aside and not used.
