Abstract: The international Bureau of Weights and Measure near Paris have preserved in their vaults two lines on a metal bar, the distance which is known as a metre. A very accurate copy of this bar is deposited in the United States Bureau of Standards in Washington DC and since the length of this material changes slightly at the temperature of melting ice. Here we have a legal standard which can be referred to at any time should there be the slightly doubt as to the accuracy of existing standards of this linear unit of measure.
