Abstract: Polyethylene piping has become the standard system for distribution of natural gas. In 1982 more than 80 percent of distribution systems installed in the United States were polyethylene (PE). This conversion has evolved since the mid 1960s, when the total system concept was introduced to the gas industry. Now with twenty years of successful experience, utility management seeks to broaden their understanding about the technical aspects of long-term PE system performance. Specifically, they want to determine if Ufe of PE systems might be limited by some mechanism such as corrosion in metal piping systems.
