Abstract: Sampling is the means of determining the nature or makeup of something by looking at a few things of many or a portion of the whole. In order to properly consider sampling and all of its modern ramifications, the word statistical must be added. This word is derived from statistics which has two quite different meanings. As a plural noun it refers to any facts stated in terms of numbers. In the other sense it is used as a singular noun and refers to a body of methods by which useful conclusions can be drawn from numerical data.
