Abstract: Comprehensive tools for evaluating the uncertainty of measurements made with coordinate measuring machines (CMMs) have been available for several years. While a variety of uncertainty evaluation methods may be considered for CMM applications, computer simulation techniques excel in offering the best combination of comprehensive coverage of measurement influence factors, defendability and generality of application. In this presentation, I will briefly discuss the principles of computer simulation methods and the concept of task-specific measurement uncertainty as it applies to CMMs. Following this, I will present several practical, real world examples of the utility of CMM uncertainty evaluation, ranging from technical understanding and optimization processes through the analysis of measurement uncertainty impacts on product profitability.
