Title: Empirical Optimization Of Measurement Systems

Abstract: Consider measurement-system adjustment based on experiments with artifacts that are remeasurable or reproducible but do not have known values. In the experiment considered, the system is adjusted in different ways, and at each adjustment, the same set of distinct artifacts is measured. The use of such an experiment to determine the optimum adjustment is complicated by the lack of known values for the artifacts. In particular, this is true for the estimation of the calibration curve and random error for each adjustment, which is required for the optimization. In this paper, the intended results of optimization experiments and the attendant complications are discussed.
