Abstract: The orifice meter has been with us for many years. In fact the Romans used a crude orifice to calculate and regulate the flow of water into homes and public buildings. Today, it is the most widely used method for measuring the flow of gas. In our company, we are primarily concerned with the wellhead measurement of gas. We consider the orifice meter to be our standard. Currently we are using both the mercury and the dry type of orifice meter however, when purchasing new meters, we are buying only the dry type. We prefer the mercury meter, but due to safety problems in handling mercury we have changed to dry type meters.
