Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to discuss the fundamental components used in orifice measurement. The general concepts of head meters, which include the orifice, have been known for centuries. The orifice has been in commercial- use since the early 1900s. The device is used to create a differential pressure which relates to the velocity of the gas from which a flow rate can be calculated. As the flowing gas passes through the restriction in the line caused by the orifice plate, the difference in the ufpstream and downstream pressures can be measured at set points, call taps, and a flow rate at the point can be determiined.
