Abstract: An expert system is a software tool that uses Artificial Intelligence technology along with the knowledge of an expert to build applications that could not be addressed with conventional programming or development tools. In essence, an expert system has the ability to capture the experience and knowledge of all senior or expert operators and make this knowledge available to anyone who accesses the system. This paper addresses Unions attempt to evaluate the feasibility of a real-time expert system and tries to demonstrate its effectiveness in process and SCADA control in the Gas Control area. The paper will focus on the application problems that are being solved and addresses the key elements in making this a successful venture.
