Abstract: The Consolidated Edison Co. of New York has installed more than two milhon feet of plastic gas pipe since 1971. Today, more than three-quarters of the buried pipe being installed on the Con Edison gas system is polyethylene plastic, ranging in sizes up through 8-inch diameter. Successful experience with this material, both from a safety and economic viewpoint, has led us to maximize the use of plastic pipe, tubing, valves, fittings and couplings on our system. Every attempt has been made to install all-plastic systems within the limitations of the various safety codes.
