Abstract: The adoption of any corrosion control program should be based primarily on the safe, economic and efficient operation of metallic facilities. Now, with the impending Office of Pipeline Safety corrosion control code, it appears that even greater emphasis will be placed on corrosion control related to gas pipelines. When corrosion control procedures are initiated, an organizational plan should be adopted and job classifications established. The wide variance in the size of gas companies, the way existing organizations have evolved and the differences in operational practices will define the type and size of organization required as well as the number of personnel. The purpose of this paper is to outline the development of the corrosion control program at Pacific Gas and Electric Company, with particular emphasis on how and why our organization is the way it is and what is tentatively planned for the future.
