Abstract: Gas measurement devices have been around since gas has been commercially bought and sold. The need to develop meters that could accurately measure consumption of gas under various conditions has challenged the industry to continuously Improve the design of its meters. As utility and transmission companies begin replacement of older metering devices, they will need to conduct an environmental evaluation of the materials that were used in the operation or maintenance of these older metering devices. The passage of several federal regulations in the 1970s to control exposure to toxic substances and reduce the health and environmental risks associated with these substances requires owners and operators of these devices to determine if such toxic substances are present before removing or disposing of them. Some states have passed regulations that are even more stringent than the federal regulations with respect to the release or disposal of some toxic substances.
