Abstract: The design of an instrument to perform automatic substitution and comparison between the rms value of an ac voltage and a stable dc voltage is described. An rms/dc converter circuit incorporating a multijunction thermal converter is the transfer element. An FET-switched input amplifier connects the ac and dc sources alternately to the converter circuit. The output voltage of the rms/dc converter with ac and with dc inputs are sampled and stored, and the amplified difference displayed on a panel meter or chart recorder. Accuracy is 2 20 parts per million (ppm) of input range of 10 to 200 volts at frequencies of 50 Hz to 1 kHz.
