Abstract: Automation is an important issue for calibration iabs. Automation of lab instruments can increase throughput and reduce operating costs, but automated equipment is often more expensive initially and must be economically justified. Since labor costs and operating expenses have become major .management issuesfor the nineties, equipment utilization, productivity and efficiency may become almost as important as calibration specs. Most labs have limitedfunds for purchasing new equipment. Those finds should be invested to insure that future calibration lab requirements wont obsolete a piece of equipment before the end of its usejul life.
