Abstract: The Howell Storage Field is operated by Panhandle Eastern Pipe Line Company, a unit of Energy Transfer. The field is located in central Michigan, 70 miles northwest of Detroit. The field was discovered in 1946, depleted and converted to gas storage in 1961. At the time of conversion to storage, the town of Howell did not have a significant impact on the storage operation. This changed over time as the residential and commercial areas expanded to encompass much of the field. Several pictures of wellsites show the proximity of the field to the city
