Abstract: Corrosion in all its forms is one of the most destructive and expensive actions taking place in the world. The lives of every person are affected by the process of corrosion. As we look about, the corrosion of steel fences, tin cans, gutter pipes, automobiles, and giant industrial complexes Is much in evidence. Recent figures indicate that the total costs of corrosion in all forms in America is 70 billion or abour 4.2% of our Gross National Product. It has been estimated that 40 billion of this cost is to the pipeline industry alone. It may help to understand the magnitude of this cost, if we point out that the total cost of all foreign oil imports in 1977 (one of our largest import years) was 45 billion.
