Abstract: A foundation in the basics of textile development is essential when fabrics designed to protect workers from high temperature and fire hazards are being compared. Part one of this paper gives the reader a basic knowledge and vocabulary needed to understand part two, which discusses the benefits of fabrics made with PBI blend fabrics over those made with Nomex III Aramid and FR cotton. Part three gives a statistical comparison of laboratory tests, and part four discusses an extreme field test of PBI/Kevlar, Nomex, and FR cotton coveralls.
