Abstract: The industrial world seems evenly split on the value and the risks of wireless transmission of data in a plant or in a field environment. The benefits are well known. There is no need for additional wiring or conduit. Integration of instruments and edge control are a strategic part of an IoT program. However, there are certainly drawbacks. Extra maintenance due to battery replacements and more instances of outside interference such as mechanical noise or conflicting frequency of signal are examples. This paper will offer thoughts and considerations on when best to apply wireless technology into your application and some of the considerations to consider when doing so. We will not land on an opinion on whether wireless or hardwire configuration is the better investment into the process. However, there are applications are better served by wireless than others. This paper will go through different sensor families observing which ones are best candidates for wireless technology and why. It will also give practical things to consider when implementing the technology with each device and overall.
