Abstract: Probably the most substantial distribution challenge in the history of Southern California Gas Co. was presented by the decision in June 1972. to adopt polyethylene (PE #2306) for systemwide main and service installation and replacement in sizes 1/2 inch through 4 inches, Since 1969 two of the 13 divisions had been using PE on an experimental basis for new installations only. Training during this phase was primarily the on-the-job variety. In other words, we were now faced with a three-faceted training project: (I) initial training of the existing company and contractor work force, (2) on-going promotional training of replacements, and (3) follow-up training as found to be necessary (and it was).
