Abstract: The Marcellus Shale is a prolific source of natural gas which spans the majority of the Appalachian Basin from New York through Pennsylvania, West Virginia and also extends into Ohio and Maryland. It occurs at a depth ranging from 4,500 feet to 8,500 feet. Its strategic location relative to the markets in the Northeastern areas, Eastern Seaboard, and Great Lakes region of the United States makes it key contributor to the natural gas supply in the United States. The importance of shale gas production cannot be overstated, with regards to providing the United States with clean abundant energy.
