Author: James A. Edmiston

Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to provide an introduction to the ANSI/ISA S84.01 standard and its application to processes in the gas industry. ISA S84.01 is a national consensus standard for the application of safety instrumented systems. The standard represents good engineering and management practices for safety control systems throughout a processes life cycle. AGAs mission statement includes promoting operational excellence in the safe, reliable, and cost effective delivery of natural gas. This paper focuses on the safe aspect of the mission. A significant body of data supports the position that focusing on safety systems leads to a better understanding of the processes, simplification of the processes, improved maintenance and record keeping, and other benefits which improve reliability and ultimately reduce costs.
