Abstract: In order to maintain and control the operation of a gas system, one must be fully aware of what is taking place. To do this effectively, information must be gathered and stored on a real time basis. By real time it is meant that the information is available, but not displayed, at all times, as compared to the time delay which we now experience. In this day and age of transducers and solid state computers, this goal is not unrealistic. There have been several companies who have realized this and have proceeded down the road of closing the loop. Algonquin Gas Transmission Company of Boston, Massachusetts, first began thinking in terms of a Data Acquisition System in the spring of 1967. At that time, a feasibility study was initiated by Algonquin to update the present telemetering system which consisled of ten strategically located stations.
